mPortico Memory Card Compatibility Market Analysis

According to new research from mPortico the global penetration rates of mobile memory cards compatible-handsets have increased drastically in the past 24 months. mPortico's research is based on 990 phones currently available in the US, Europe, and Asia sold through carriers and other retail channels. The initial data confirms that currently, mobile devices with MicroSD and MiniSD expansion-slots make up the largest share of the market, with 34% and 26% respectively. Mobile devices not supporting mobile memory card are down to approximately 10% of the handset market.

mPortico's analysis of the mobile memory card market in the United Kingdom, France, and the United
States reveals that the penetration rates are pervasive. In all three countries, the total amount of handsets with memory card slots is over 90%. From 2005 to 2007 out of the three countries, the US market has the highest rate of penetration, as 96% of the handsets sold through the leading carriers have memory card expansion slots. The United Kingdom follows the US market, as handsets with memory card slots make up 93% of the total handsets available. The French market follows with 91% memory card compatibility.

These consistently high percentages in three major mobile markets illustrate that there is a demand for increased memory capacity, mainly due to mobile videos, games, and other applications’ steady growth in size. Handset manufacturers are attempting to satisfy market demand by producing a large number of mobile devices with memory card expansion slots.

These figures indicate that mobile memory cards are a viable platform to deliver premium mobile content to the mass market.
